Sexual Health for Men - Checking for lumps

We all think “Yeah there can’t be anything wrong with my balls, I know that problems sometimes exist, but nothing wrong with mine!!” And that might be true, but wouldn’t you like to know for sure? And the best of all you don’t even need to go to the doctor for this one. It can be (and should be!) done in a private place when you are alone.

Why should I check my nuts on a regular basis?

It really makes good sense to check your testicles on a regular basis - once a month is good. That way, if anything does appear there is a VERY, VERY good chance to get it treated successfully.

Where is the best place to check them?

The best place to check your testicles is in the shower or the bath. The heat relaxes your scrotum and makes it easer to find any lumps or abnormalities.

How do I check my testicles?

Hold the scrotum in the palm of your hand and use your fingers and thumbs to feel your testicles.

Some difference is perfectly normal; for instance, one testicle may be larger or hang lower.

Gently feel each one by rolling it between your thumb and forefingers. Then press each testicle gently.

You'll find there's a soft tube at the top and back of the testicle. This is the epididymis, which carries and stores sperm. Don't confuse this with a lump; it's supposed to be there. You'll also feel the smooth spermatic tube which runs up from the epididymis.

What should I look out for?

Each testicle should be smooth, with no lumps or swellings. Check for any small irregularities, enlargements or changes in firmness. A lump that might be dangerous can be anything from the size of a pea. It's not usually painful, though there may be a dull ache.

Men don't usually develop cancer in both testicles at once, so if you are worried about something on one of your testicles, compare it with the other.

I found a lump of some sort, what do I do?

Don’t worry, a lump in your family jewels is not necessarily a cancerous lump.  There are many other explanations that could solve your fears. But most important - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!! If you have any fears or doubt about anything you find, go and see your doctor as he will be able to help you!

Tips to keep healthy

  • Try quitting smoking if you do smoke, by smoking you decrease the blood flow to your penis and balls. That can lead to impotence and all sorts of genital problems
  • Try cutting down on alcohol if you are a heavy drinker
  • Try to cut down on very fatty foods or unhealthy diets
  • Walk instead of taking the bus or a taxi, also get off your butt and make a regular trip to the gym (it will only do you good!)

Again, if you have any fears or doubt please go see your doctor, it might be the most important appointment you can make!!
