Sexual Health for Men - Impotence
Erectile Dysfunction, otherwise known as impotence, strikes fear in the heart of any red-blooded man who enjoys sex (which is about 99.99% of them). But the million-dollar question is: why do men suffer such a cruel fate and what can we do to better their chances of avoiding such a floppy subject?
Let's first start with: how do I get an erection?
Blood is pumped into the penis, making it firm. This usually begins when a man thinks about sex (again 99.99% of the time) or when stimulated - or both. This causes signals to travel down the nerves which lead from the spinal cord to the genitals causing the blood vessels which supply the penis to open more, so that blood flows in and the penis enlarges. This is a very complex process.
What could make a man's pride and joy literally let him down?
Impotence is not always an illness on its own, but may be a symptom of another illness like high blood pressure, diabetes or any form of nerve damage. That is the biggest of all reasons to speak to your doctor if you experience any form of erectile dysfunction. Here are some major causes of impotence
Vascular - eg Diabetes and heart disease
Medication - eg Regular medication with a devastating side effect
Physiological - eg Suffering from too much stress or going through a tough time
Other illness - eg Nerve damage or trauma
In many cases it can be more than one of the above and is not going to go away without treatment.
I have finally plucked up the courage to speak to my doctor, what or my odds recovering fully?
It is pretty good depending on how long the problem has been left for and what is causing the problem. But most impotence cases can be cured and the man can get back to his normal sexual routine. Thank God for modern medicine!!!
What can I do to avoid a lifeless penis?
STOP SMOKING. Cigarettes clog up the arteries that supply blood to those vital blood vessels which in turn supply blood to your penis. And that means no blood = no erection!! So for every cigarette you smoke you are getting that one step closer to having to read the answer to the question just above this one.
EAT HEALTHY - try to watch what you eat. This does not mean that you should starve yourself and only eat salads and rice cakes. But try not to eat too many fatty foods and cut down on the chips and greasy burgers. All these lovely fats you get out of this type of food also clog up arteries.
CUT DOWN ON THE WEEKEND BINGES. There is no need to stop drinking entirely but do cut down on the amount you drink.
CUT DOWN ON DRUGS. This doesn't mean the type you buy over the counter, but be wary of them too. Illegal drugs have a devastating effect on the human body not to mention the effect it has on your pecker and really should be avoided.
START GETTING SOME EXERCISE. Start walking and stop taking buses and taxi's. If you could join a gym, even better (but you actually have to go to the gym). Regular exercise burns off unwanted fats in those veins, the same veins that provides power to your penis.
All the above should be done as part of a healthy life style so that you age well and in your golden years you can still look good.
